Windsor Police Chief Jus tin Jackson said thanks to the quick thinking of South ern Bank staff members, a Greenville man is behind bars. The incident occurred April 3 when Corde L. Bishop, 23, allegedly entered South ern Bank in Windsor and at tempted to cash a check. Staff members at Southern Bank were suspicious of the check and contact the Wind sor Police Department. Lt. Frank Ratzlaff said mul tiple officers responded to the scene and Cpl. Eddie Hoggard and Officer Tahj Smallwood spoke to Bishop. “While they were question ing Mr. Bishop, Chief Jack- son and staff from Southern Bank determined the check Mr. Bishop had in his pos session was fraudulent,” Lt. Ratzlaff said. Officers also found out Bishop had been able to cash fraudulent checks in Ayden, Farmville and Pinetops pri or to being apprehended in Windsor. Bishop was placed under arrest and charged with at tempting to obtain property by false pretense and pos session of a counterfeit in strument. This program offers forgivable educational loans for high school seniors and graduates seeking a career in law enforcement. The team, which is a chapter of Outdoors Atlast, hosts the event each year. Partici pants get the chance to shoot targets with experienced adults, fish on the Roanoke Riv er and turkey hunt the next morning. Jonathan Stalls, team secretary, said they have hosted young people facing their own unique challenges. Some of their challenges can be seen; others may not be as visible. “They might have medical issues,” he said. Hayes MIDWAY - A man sus pected of selling drugs ran, but couldn’t get away here recently. Bertie County Sheriff John Holley said two of his officers went to a residence near Mid way to fol low up on complaints of drug sales by Deontrae Jer maine Hayes. Sheriff Holley said when Lt. Matt Roebuck and Sgt. Martin Phelps arrived at 16276 U.S. 17 North, Hayes left the ve hicle he was in and ran into a nearby wooded area. Sgt. Phelps gave chase while Lt. There will be blood drives in Askewville and Windsor beginning this week and continuing through the end of the nionth. With April being National Volunteer Month, officials with the American Red Cross are encouraging people to take the opportunity to vol unteer as blood donors. They confirm blood of all types - especially type 0 - is needed to help ensure avail ability of blood for those who need it. The opportunity to give blood in Bertie County will begin Tuesday, April 16. The event is planned from 12:30- 6:30 p.m. at Bethel Assembly Christian Academy, which is located at 105 Askewville- Bryant St. The second one, spon sored by the Rotary Club of Windsor, will be Thursday, April 25 at the Windsor Com munity Building.
